Mashup Spotlight: GenErik – Higher State Of Foxiness

With “Big Furry Fox“, I feel like I’ve got a new favourite in my discography. I’ll always look back fondly upon “E.T. Eats Peanuts“, but even that mashup wasn’t as subversive as this one is. I wasn’t aware that I was turning a comedy song into something dead serious; even now, I honestly think there’s a darkly humourous undercurrent running through the mashup.

It’s been a long time since I did a spotlight, but I think it’s appropriate here. If I didn’t hear this mashup by GenErik, I wouldn’t have attempted to put my own stamp on “The Fox”. This is my way of saying “thank you.”

Mashup Spotlight: Cellular Oki – Take Your Teardrop Out Tonight

I didn’t listen to this one at The Stix until it got frontpaged. I’m so very sorry I initially ignored it. File this mashup under “Unlikely Combinations Which Somehow Work.” Seriously – Massive Attack meshing so well with the Scissor Sisters? Get out.

…Until you actually hear it.

Mashup Spotlight: Void Butterworth – Right On Down The House

I reviewed this one over at The Stix. I mentioned that the overall mix needed some air (and this issue seems to have been fixed in version 2), but this mashup idea is very cheeky and retro. In that respect, I won’t knock it.

Put it this way: there are a lot of people doing mashups with Lady Gaga’s “Applause” right now. I’m not knocking that, but it’s nice to hear something a bit different compared to what’s “in” at the moment.

Mashup Spotlight: SpareElbowSkin – “Blurred Bart”

Featuring this mashup here is a no-brainer. I’m all for mashups which use unexpected sources (as if my own work wasn’t proof of that) and have a sense of humour about them, but even I couldn’t have seen this one coming. I was in grade six when “Bartman” originally came out, so it’s been a very long time since I’ve heard that song!

Enough ado, here’s “Blurred Bart” by SpareElbowSkin.

Mashup Spotlight: S.I.R. Remixes – “Can’t Hold Us On The Floor”

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Mashup Spotlight, where I’ll highlight other people’s mashups which I’m currently enjoying. In this edition, I’d like to highlight S.I.R. Remixes’ “Can’t Hold Us On The Floor” (linked to Mashupciti because I refuse to stay up all night trying to embed Zippyshare’s player).

I confess: I’m not crazy about Jennifer Lopez’s “On The Floor,” and I haven’t knowingly heard Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us” enough times to have an informed opinion about it. However, this mashup is a straight up delight. Simply put: like all good mashups, it works.
